How does an ovarian cyst form?

The female reproductive system has two ovaries which can produce eggs as well as hormones like estrogen and progesterone. When the ovaries produce eggs, they develop in an ovarian lining called the follicle. And once the egg has developed, it breaks through the follicle (ovulation). During this process, it is possible for the fluid in the follicle to form a structure called an ovarian follicle (cyst) according to Dr. Matthew Boente MD.

If this is your first time hearing about ovarian cyst, do not be alarmed. Ovarian cysts are common among women. As they are, they are completely harmless to the female body. However, there are some complications that come with the continued growth of the cyst.

Let’s talk about a more unusual condition with ovarian cysts. It is possible for doctors to find a cancerous growth within the cystic ovarian mass at the time of surgery. And while this condition is less common the risk does increase with increasing age and a strong family history of ovarian cancer. Unfortunately, this condition often shows little to no symptom at all. The cancer spreads slowly in a way not to cause serious symptoms initially. When ovarian cancer is suspected the patient should be referred to a gynecologic oncologist. Even if there isn’t one close to home travel to a bigger city where one is available could be lifesaving. Dr. Matthew Boente believes that women should be aware of the symptoms of an ovarian cyst and should see an Ob-Gyn yearly or when unusual symptoms develop.

Dr. Matthew Boente MD is an ovarian cancer expert and has served in the National Comprehensive Cancer Center-(NCCN) Cervix and endometrial cancer screening task force for two years. For similar reads, visit this website.
